Three simple tests can calibrate you materials and equipment, virtually guaranteeing that the negatives you’ll make will be properly exposed and developed, and delightfully easy to scan or print.
The kit includes everything you need – no densitometer is required. Instructions include “cheats” for successful use with staining developers, such as Pyro-based formulas, which can give inaccurate results even with densitometers.
Instructions are also included for the Simplified Zone System method of exposure in the field, which takes all the mystery and difficulty out of the Zone System, and ensures properly-exposed negatives every time. The Film Test Kit is a short course in the zone system, making it easy for anyone to use.
Bruce Barlow extends Fred Picker’s ideas and packages them into a useful kit for traditional photographers. The kit contains:
- Ten pages of detailed instructions on the test procedures, and using the Simplified Zone System in the field.
- Two .1 ND filters (not optical quality) for evaluating ISO film speed tests (use one, put one in a safe place).
- A sample of Zone VIII and paper base for evaluating development time tests.
Those who own or are buying Finely Focused, the CD-ROM book, need not purchase the Film Test Kit. Finely Focused includes the instructions, ND filters and Zone VIII sample.
